Custom foot orthoses are prescriptive devices that are worn in the shoes to address any biomechanical issues that may be contributing to pain in the feet, ankles, legs, knees, hips and lower back. They can be made in a variety of materials and styles to suit the needs of the patient and are designed to last several years before needing replacement.
Orthotic therapy has been shown to be beneficial in the management of many painful conditions not limited to:
Our Specialist Musculoskeletal Podiatrists are experts in orthotic prescription and will conduct a thorough Musculoskeletal Assessment with Video Gait Analysis to determine firstly if you would benefit from foot orthoses and secondly to derive the most optimal prescription to address any biomechanical issues that may be contributing to your painful symptoms.
If foot orthoses are indicated, your Podiatrist will take a 3D digital foot scan using our state of the art DELCAM foot scanner which will produce a simulated 3D cast of your feet. This is then sent, along with your prescription to our orthotic manufacturer where your custom orthoses will be made.
The standard turnaround time from sending your scans and prescription to receiving your orthotic devices is approximately three weeks. When they arrive, you will be invited in for your orthotic fitting appointment where we advise you to bring a bag of your footwear. Your Podiatrist will then check the fit of your orthoses and will give you advice on footwear selection to optimise the benefits of wearing them.
There is a six month window where your Podiatrist may make adjustments to your orthotic prescription and you will be reviewed usually at 6 and 12 weeks to ensure your orthoses are doing their job. In the majority of cases, patients will feel the benefit of wearing their orthoses by their first review, however on the very rare occasion a patient may not tolerate orthotic therapy at all and other approaches may need to be considered to address their symptoms.
The orthoses that we provide at Active Step are high quality and should last several years. We recommend that you get them refurbished every 12-18 months which includes replacement of top covers and additions as this will prolong their life!
